WHAT IS ENERGY RECOVERY VENTILATION?
Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) is the energy recovery process of exchanging the energy contained in normally exhausted building or space air and using it to treat (precondition) the incoming outdoor ventilation air in residential and commercial HVAC systems.
When considering heating and cooling one should also consider ventilation. These days there are excellent ventilation units available that can recover the energy used in winter heating or summer cooling.
The outgoing stale air can be transferred to the incoming fresh air using ceramic filters that store the energy then release it as air direction reverses. This not only makes the home feel fresh and airy all year round but also reduces the heating or cooling load which saves on running costs.
It also means that the size of heat pump or air conditioner can be smaller and saves on purchase cost and also running costs.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HRV & ERV
Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) is a mechanism which uses the stale exhaust air to preheat the incoming fresh air. This reduces the amount of energy required to bring the outside air upto ambient room temperature. The air exchange is done in single area of home.
Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) is a step forward than HRV as this system also captures the humidity in air to keep it on the same side of thermal envelope that it came from in two cycles.
ERV or HRV: What's best for you?
As a rule of thumb, if your house is humid in winter HRV is a better choice as it would get rid of excess humidity.
If your house is too dry in winter then an ERV would be a better choice as it would get rid of excess humidity.
